Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace two bridges (Bridge No. 292 and Bridge No. 467) over Battleground Avenue and the A&Y Railroad in Greensboro. The project is programmed as Project BR-0078 in the NCDOT Highway Maintenance Improvement Program. The existing bridges will be replaced in place.

Two off-site detours will be utilized during construction to accommodate ramp closures for roadway realignment. (maps shown below)

  1. For the closure of the Battleground Avenue southbound loop to Wendover Avenue, motorists will follow a 3-mile detour utilizing Benjamin Parkway and Wendover Avenue.

  2. For the closure of the Wendover Avenue eastbound ramp to southbound Battleground Avenue, motorists will follow a 1.6-mile detour via Benjamin Parkway.

The bridge over Battleground Avenue will be replaced with a new bridge on the existing alignment.

The bridge over the A&Y Railroad will be replaced with a new pedestrian underpass structure on the existing alignment.

  • The typical section includes three lanes, and is median-divided, in each direction.
  • The underpass will accommodate pedestrians below Wendover Avenue on the future A&Y multi-use path, programmed under State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) Project No. EB-6037C.

Surveys conducted by NCDOT's Structure Management Unit (SMU) indicate that both bridges are in relatively poor condition or have insufficient load-carrying capacity. While the bridges are currently safe for traffic, they are approaching the end of their useful life and in need of replacement.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
