Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes replacing a two-lane bridge (Bridge No. 19) on Bradford Heights Road (S.R. 3217) over Catawba Creek in Gastonia, Gaston County. The project is needed to replace the structurally deficient bridge that has reached the end of its lifespan. Structurally deficient means there are elements of the bridge that need to be monitored and/or repaired. The fact that a bridge is "structurally deficient" does not imply that it is unsafe.

The project proposes to replace bridge in its existing location and the bridge will remain closed to traffic during construction. Residents have submitted a petition to permanently close the bridge. A small group meeting will be held with residents on March 9, 2026.

Replace-in-Place Bridge Details

  • Two 12-foot lanes one in each travel direction
  • Shoulders along either side of the bridge

Project History

Gaston County Bridge 19 was included in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) in 2015 as Project Number B-5851 and was funded for $1.21 million. In 2017, it was deleted from the STIP and moved to the Bridge Replacement Program. In the autumn of 2024, the bridge was closed after a poor bridge inspection report.

This project is listed as BP12.R041 and is funded under the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Bridge Replacement Program for $3.9 million.

Please provide any comments or questions regarding the proposed bridge replacement.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
