Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes replacing a two-lane bridge (Bridge No. 19) on Bradford Heights Road (S.R. 3217) over Catawba Creek in Gastonia, Gaston County. The project is needed to replace the structurally deficient bridge that has reached the end of its lifespan. Structurally deficient means there are elements of the bridge that need to be monitored and/or repaired. The fact that a bridge is "structurally deficient" does not imply that it is unsafe.
The project proposes to replace bridge in its existing location and the bridge will remain closed to traffic during construction. Residents have submitted a petition to permanently close the bridge. A small group meeting will be held with residents on March 9, 2026.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
