Project Overview

Project HB-0031 would replace the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Street bridges that cross U.S. 52 between Downtown Winston-Salem and East Winston.

The project is needed because the bridges were constructed in the early 1960s, and have currently reached the end of their lifespan. The project will also improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity between Downtown Winston-Salem and East Winston.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th Street bridges will be replaced with similar structures. All bridges would have sidewalks on both sides, with 3rd and 4th Street having designated bike lanes and 5th Street being a transit-oriented bridge. These designs are consistent with local plans. Design options are in development and may change.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
