Project Highlights
The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to replace the bridge (referred to as Bridge No. 23) on U.S. 64 over the Nantahala River in Macon County (TIP No. BR-0028). Bridge No. 23 was constructed in 1965 and is considered structurally deficient. The fact that a bridge is "structurally deficient" does not imply that it is unsafe. It means the bridge must be monitored, inspected and repaired/replaced at an appropriate time to maintain its structural integrity.
The project proposes replacing the existing bridge with a new structure in place. The bridge will consist of two 12-foot travel lanes, with 8-ft shoulders on each side. Paved shoulders along U.S. 64 will expand up to 4' as the roadway approaches the bridge structure on each side. A temporary bridge will be constructed just south of the existing bridge for traffic flow during construction. The temporary bridge will consist of two 12-foot travel lanes with 2-ft shoulders on each side.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
