Project Description

NCDOT is proposing to replace Bridges  U.S. 15/501 over Cornwallis Road (S.R. 1308) with a single bridge in Durham County. The bridges were built in 1956 and 1971, respectively. Bridge No. 310080 carries northbound traffic and Bridge No. 310083 carries southbound traffic on U.S. 15/501. The bridges are considered to be structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.

Bridge 310080 (northbound lanes) is structurally deficient. Bridge 310083 (southbound lanes) is functionally obsolete.

  • Structurally deficient means that a bridge is in poor condition or has insufficient load-carrying capacity.
  • Functionally obsolete means that a bridge is narrow, has inadequate under-clearances, has insufficient load-carrying capacity, is poorly aligned with the roadway, and can no longer adequately service today’s traffic.

Project Overview

The proposed new bridge will include:

  • Four 12-foot travel lanes
  • 12-foot, 3-inch inside shoulders
  • 22-foot exterior shoulders (Note: exterior shoulders are meant to accommodate a future 12-foot travel lane)

The replacement structure will accommodate the following features on W. Cornwallis Road:

  • Two 12-foot travel lanes
  • A center 12-foot turn lane
  • A 10-foot paved shoulder on the north side of the roadway
  • A 17.5-foot paved shoulder on the south side of the roadway to accommodate a future greenway.

On Site Detour:

  • The project will be built using phased construction. No off-site detour is proposed for traffic during construction.
  • No relocation of existing residential or commercial structures is anticipated.

Resources for Property Owners

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road

project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right

of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
