Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to enhance safety for motorists and minimize the risk of vehicle-train collisions in Monroe, Union County.
The project proposes to close the existing at-grade railroad crossing on Fletcher Broome Road (S.R. 1157) and realign New Town Road (S.R. 1315) to create a new intersection with N.C. 75 (Waxhaw Highway). The realignment of New Town Road will result in a reconfigured railroad crossing and roadway intersection which reduces the skew of the crossing and improves safety. Fletcher Broome Road will be closed on either side of the railroad tracks.
Project History
NCDOT identified an opportunity for safety improvements due to the short distance between N.C. 75 and CSX railroad at Fletcher Broome Road and the skew of the existing at-grade railroad crossing at New Town Road
Several alternatives that were investigated would have required replacement of railroad flashers and gates along with preemption if a traffic signal is installed at the N.C. 75 / Fletcher Broom intersection.
NCDOT Division 10 and the NCDOT Rail Division evaluated multiple scenarios and recommends relocation of New Town Road to provide a safer, improved crossing of the CSX Railroad.
The existing Fletcher Broome Road railroad crossing would need to close in order to access funding for the realignment of New Town Road.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
