Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on N.C. 24 West (Lejeune Boulevard) over Northeast Creek in Jacksonville, Onslow County. The existing 350-foot westbound bridge would be replaced in-place. Traffic would be maintained with a temporary on-site detour on the existing eastbound bridge during construction. No work will be done on the eastbound bridge.
The proposed bridge would include three 12-foot travel lanes and 10-foot shoulders on each side replacing the existing bridge in place.
N.C. 24 West is a rural major collector. In the vicinity of the project N.C. 24 West is 6 lanes divided 3 lanes in each direction and 4-foot shoulders. The posted speed limit on N.C. 24 West is 55 mph.
Built in 1942, the existing bridge is aging and due for replacement. This does not imply that the 82-year-old bridge is unsafe. It means the bridge is reaching the end of its lifecycle and must be monitored, inspected and maintained on a more frequent basis.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
