Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to build a roundabout where U.S. 158, U.S. Business, and Dorsey Road (S.R. 1611) meet, near the Vance County line, in Granville County. The purpose of the project is to  create a safer experience for users, and streamline traffic flow.

Roundabouts reduce serious crashes by slowing traffic and eliminating dangerous left turns while helping vehicles move more smoothly than traditional stop signs. The new layout will make it easier and safer to access nearby homes, schools, and businesses, with drivers spending less time waiting at intersections. In addition, the design includes wider shoulders and a truck apron around the center island to allow large vehicles to safely navigate the roundabout.

This intersection has a long and severe crash history. Over the past seven years, 15 crashes have occurred, including one fatality, nine non-fatal injuries, and five property damage incidents. Most crashes were attributed to left-turn and angle-type collisions.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
