Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes replacing Bridge No. 211 on Old Greensboro Road over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Winston-Salem. The project is needed because the bridge was constructed in 1953 and has reached the end of its lifespan.

A new bridge will be constructed immediately north of the existing structure. During construction, traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge to minimize disruption. The proposed bridge will span approximately 139 feet and will include two 12-foot-wide travel lanes, separated by a 6-foot-wide concrete median. Additional width has been incorporated into the design to accommodate a future multi-use path on the north side and a sidewalk on the south side.

The project also includes the realignment of Mountain Street to the west and the construction of a "peanut" roundabout at the intersection of Old Greensboro Road, Myer Lee Road, the realigned Mountain Street, and the U.S. 421 Southbound on and off-ramp.

A "peanut" roundabout is a type of roundabout with a distinctive shape that looks like a peanut with two circular ends connected by a narrow middle section. It is essentially two mini roundabouts joined together, creating an elongated shape resembling a peanut. A peanut roundabout is designed to improve traffic flow at off-set intersections where the junctions are too wide or oddly shaped and where a traditional circular roundabout will not fit or operate efficiently.

The peanut roundabout will be constructed in stages to allow traffic to be maintained on-site throughout construction, minimizing disruption to local traffic.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
