Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes constructing a roundabout at the intersection of New Town Road, Cuthbertson Road, and Farm Creek Road in Wesley Chapel, Union County. The existing three lane intersection has operational and geometric deficiencies. The proposed roundabout would address these deficiencies

The project proposes replacing the existing signalized three-way intersection with a four-leg roundabout. The proposed design includes:

  • Two 11-foot lanes and grassed shoulders
  • Three of the four legs of the roundabout will have a two-lane approach
  • The Farm Creek Road leg of the roundabout will have a single lane approach

To accommodate the new roundabout the alignment of the intersection will shift southwest. The shift will involve the removal and realignment of the current Cuthbertson Road approach and the realignment of the eastern New Town Road approach. Farm Creek Road will no longer be connected to Cuthbertson Road and become its own leg of the roundabout.

A temporary offsite detour will maintain traffic during a portion of construction. The detour is temporary and during the remainder of construction, traffic will be maintained on the existing roadway. Any detour would happen during summer months to reduce impact on school traffic. Some right-of-way acquisition is expected for this project. Construction will start in May 2028.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
