Project Need:
The project area has experienced notable growth and development, leading to increased traffic volumes and congestion. Existing (2016) traffic volumes along Catawba Avenue and U.S. 21 (Statesville Road) in the project area are approximately 30,000 and 15,000 vehicles per day, respectively. Future (2040) traffic volumes along Catawba Avenue are projected to exceed 45,000 vehicles per day.
Project History:
The N.C. Department of Transportation evaluated four design options. These options included a roundabout, a quadrant intersection, a continuous flow intersection (CFI), and dual roundabouts. Based on a review of impacts associated with each option, and in coordination with the Town of Cornelius and neighborhoods adjacent to the project, the dual roundabout option was selected as the preferred alternative.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
