Preliminary Engineering Activities for this project
have been suspended.
The NC Department of Transportation is proposing to convert intersection at U.S. 17 and N.C. 904 to a reduced conflict intersection in Brunswick County.
STIP project R-5851 will construct concrete islands in the center of the existing intersection of U.S. 17 and N.C. 904 and turn lanes with U-turn bulbs approximately 1,000 feet on either side of the intersection.

Purpose and Need:
STIP project R-5851 will convert intersection at U.S. 17 and N.C. 904 to a reduced conflict intersection in Brunswick County, NC.
An RCI is a Reduced Conflict Intersection, which is designed to reduce potential collisions for vehicles and pedestrians by allowing drivers from a side road to only turn right. To go the other direction, or cross the highway, they then would pull into a dedicated lane to make a U-turn, and then go straight or turn right at the intersection.
The purpose for this project is to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection of U.S. 17 and N.C. 904. By constructing concrete islands in the middle of the intersection and redirecting traffic to U-turn bulbs on either side of the intersection, motorists will be given a safer way to merge onto U.S. 17 and can access N.C. 904 without having to wait for all lanes to clear, reducing wait time.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
