Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing roadway improvements at the intersection of Old Stage Road (S.R. 1006) and Ten Ten Road (S.R. 1010).  The purpose of this project is to relieve congestion and improve traffic operations through design year 2045.  Two alternatives have been proposed.

NCDOT prefers Alternative 2A shown below, and is moving forward with design development. Alternative 2A is more involved and thus more costly.  In the event funding to construct Alternative 2A is not received, a second, less costly option (Alternative 1) is being proposed.  Both alternatives would potentially provide sidewalks in front of Vance Elementary school (southwest corner of the intersection).

Alternative 2A:

add a northbound auxiliary lane on Old Stage Road from N.C. 540 to 1000 feet north of Ten Ten Road

add a 400-foot eastbound right-turn lane on Ten Ten Road

add a right-turn lane on Old Stage Road from Ten Ten Road to the Vance Elementary School driveway

 

Alternative 1:

add a100-foot northbound right-turn lane on Old Stage Road

add a 400-foot eastbound right-turn lane on Ten Ten Road  

Project History

The Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) law includes a provision for a funding allocation to local governments based on funding contributed by the local government to transportation projects or revenue from tolling. This bonus allocation can be used to fund the construction of other eligible highway projects.

Early in 2020, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) received notice from NCDOT that there would be a bonus allocation to CAMPO from the N.C. 540 (toll road) project. This project, at the intersection of Old Stage Road and Ten-Ten Road, was one of several selected by CAMPO for the bonus allocation funding. NCDOT began project development work for the project in early 2021.
