NCDOT proposes to improve the Uwharrie Trailhead Parking Lot on N.C. 24/27 east of River Road in Montgomery County. NCDOT needs your input on this proposed improvement as it will involve realignment of a portion of the trail in the vicinity of the parking lot.

Project Overview:
The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to make improvements to N.C. 24/27 from N.C. 73 to the Troy Bypass. The project would widen existing N.C. 24/27 to a four-lane divided roadway.
As part of the proposed improvements NCDOT, in coordination with the United States Forest Service, has committed to extend the existing N.C. 24/27 trailhead parking lot. Construction of the parking lot will require a portion of the Uwharrie Recreational Walking Trail to be realigned. Impacts to the walking trail are expected to be minimal and will not adversely affect the activities, features and attributes that qualify the soil trail’s protection under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Section 4(f) law.
Project Highlights:
Project R-2527 is approximately 8.25 miles long and involves widening N.C. 24/27 in Montgomery County from a two-lane facility to a four-lane divided facility with a 46-foot depressed grass median and 10-foot outside shoulders. The proposed design speed will be 60 mph.
It is anticipated that 150 to 250 feet of right-of-way will be required to accommodate the proposed improvements. The project will be designed with partial control of access. All intersecting roadways will cross the highway at grade and no grade separations or interchanges are proposed. The project also includes the replacement of a rail line crossing over N.C. 24/27. The track is owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway and is leased to Aberdeen Carolinas and Western Railway. Construction on Project R-2527 is anticipated to begin in 2023.
