R-5914: Improvements to N.C. 67-Yadkin County
The N.C. Department of Transportation, Highway Division 11, is beginning the project development, environmental, and engineering studies for project R-5914. The project proposes to improve N.C. 67 from U.S. 601 in the Town of Boonville to West Main Street in the Town of East Bend in Yadkin County. The proposed improvements would modernize the roadway with wider travel lanes, paved shoulders, and intersection improvements.

Project Overview
The purpose of the project is to improve mobility and safety. N.C. 67 is a two-lane highway with narrow travel lanes and no shoulders which does not meet current design standards. N.C. 67 serves as a connector route between I-77 and Winston-Salem. Existing and future traffic on N.C. 67 is not expected to exceed capacity but the corridor was identified as a candidate for upgrading to current NCDOT design standards. This facility is recommended to have 12-foot lanes with paved shoulders in order to improve mobility and safety.
Project R-5914 is included in the NCDOT’s currently adopted 2024-2033 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) with right-of-way acquisition programmed in fiscal year (FY) 2026 and construction programmed in FY 2028. Please note this schedule is subject to change. NCDOT is preparing an environmental document, and a Categorical Exclusion (CE).
Improvements along N.C. 67 include:
3-lane road (two thru-lanes, one in each direction and a center turn lane) with curb and gutter and sidewalks on each side of the roadway from Mill Street to River Road
2-lane road with 5-ft paved shoulders from River Road to the Town of East Bend
Left turn lanes on N.C. 67 eastbound and westbound at the intersection of Nebo Road/Smithtown Road
Several intersections will be realigned to improve roadway angle
West Main Street – intersection to be reconfigured

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
