Project Information

Three alternatives are being considered for the project.  The alternatives are described here and can be viewed individually and commented on below.

  • All Alternatives provide the same realignment of the N.C. 55/N.C. 42 connections to U.S. 401
  • All Alternatives Cross U.S. 401 and the railroad in the same location
  • All Alternatives connect to Judd Parkway just east of Stewart Street
  • Alternatives 1 and 2 follow the same alignment from Judd Parkway to west of Sunset Lake Road

Alternative 1

The most northerly of the three alternatives

  • Begins at Judd Parkway and travels east to Sunset Lake Road
  • Continues, passing south of the Jones-Johnson Ballentine Historic District
  • Turns  and crosses the Railroad and U.S. 401 near Wilbur Jones Road

Alternative 2

The central alternative

  • Begins at Judd Parkway and travels east to Sunset Lake Road
  • Continues, passing north of Smith Farms—the residential area that is located on the west side of Sunset Lake Road
  • Continues, passing on the north side of the Abiding Presence Lutheran Church property
  • Turns and crosses the Railroad and U.S. 401 near Wilbur Jones Road

Alternative 3

The most southerly alignment

  • Connects to existing Products Road
  • East of existing Products Road, continues to Sunset Lake Road

Proposed Improvements to the existing U.S. 401/N.C. 55 and N.C. 55/N.C. 42 Intersections

N.C. 42 will be realigned beginning in the vicinity of N. Harrison Place Lane. The realigned N.C. 42 will travel southwesterly and connect to N.C. 55 at a new intersection located approximately 6-tenths of a mile south of the existing connection.

A connection between realigned N.C. 55 and U.S. 401 will be created approximately 1,000 feet southwest of the current N.C. 42/N.C. 55 connection.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
