PROJECT OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to widen U.S. 258 from approximately 0.5 mile south of Browntown Road (S.R. 1101) to N.C. 148 (C.F. Harvey Parkway) in Greene and Lenoir Counties to a four-lane median divided roadway.
Once complete, the project will help improve safety for the traveling public, as well as improve regional connectivity for passenger vehicles and truck freight.

PROJECT HISTORY
The project was proposed in the Kinston Comprehensive Transportation Plan, which was adopted by NCDOT in March 2011. It was also proposed in the 2012 Greene County Comprehensive Transportation Plan, which was adopted by NCDOT in July 2012. The project was scored in SPOT 4.0 as a Division Needs Project with a 25.29 out of 50. The project was then listed in the State Transportation Improvement Plan as R-5814.
PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT
The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold public meetings during the planning process to present design concepts and get feedback on the project.

Based on results of NCDOT’s funding formula, the U.S. 258 widening project is listed as Project R-5814 in the current State Transportation Improvement Program and is funded for approximately $47 million.
