History
The Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) law includes a provision for a funding allocation to local governments based on funding contributed by the local government to transportation projects or revenue from tolling. This bonus allocation can be used to fund the construction of other eligible highway projects.
Early in 2020, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) received notice from NCDOT that there would be a bonus allocation to CAMPO from the N.C. 540 (toll road) project. This project, on Sunset Lake Road, was one of several selected by CAMPO for the bonus allocation funding. NCDOT began project development work for the project in early 2021.

Widening Sunset Lake Road to four lanes with a median between Holly Springs Road and Lockley Road. A sidewalk is planned on the west side and a multi-use path will be built on the east side of Sunset Lake Road within the project limits.
Traffic impacts may occur throughout construction. Advance notice will be provided when major traffic pattern changes, lane closures, or access modifications are planned and confirmed.
One extended closure is expected to last 59 hours over a weekend as crews install roadway drainage. Sunset Lake Road will close between Eisenhower Drive and Holly Springs Road.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday and end at 6 a.m. Monday.
During the closure, drivers will be detoured along Holly Springs Road, North Main Street (N.C. 55) and Sunset Lake Road.
NCDOT and project partners are coordinating on activities that could affect school transportation, crossings, and campus access with Wake County Public Schools.
