R-5857: U.S. 17 Intersection Improvements near Shallotte

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes intersection improvements at the intersection of U.S. 17 at U.S. 17 Business (Main Street)/Frontage Road N.W., north of Shallotte, and at U.S. 17 at U.S. 17 Business (Main Street)/Old Shallotte Road (S.R. 1316), south of Shallotte. Project Overview:

NCDOT proposes to construct a Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI) on U.S. 17 at two intersections near Shallotte. The designs have been developed toreduce the number of conflict points where a crash can occur, and simplify how traffic moves through the intersections.

RCI of  U.S. 17 at Main Street/Frontage Road N.W.:

  • Drivers on U.S. 17 will follow their usual path

  • Raised medians will redirect drivers on Main Street/Frontage Road N.W. to turn right onto U.S. 17.

  • To go the other direction on U.S. 17, or to cross the highway, drivers will pull into a dedicated lane to make a U-turn.

  • The existing traffic signal would be removed.

RCI of  U.S. 17 at Main Street/Old Shallotte Road:

  • Drivers on U.S. 17 will follow their usual path

  • Raised medians will redirect drivers on Main Street/Old Shallotte Road to turn right onto U.S. 17.

  • To go the other direction on U.S. 17, or to cross the highway, drivers will pull into a dedicated lane to make a U-turn.

  • The existing traffic signal would be removed

  • Additional modifications of the intersection include:

    • Wildwood Street N.W. will be realighned to connect to Old Shallotte Road further away from the intersection.

    • East Coast Lane will be realigned to connect to the realigned Wildwood Street N.W.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
